Description
redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This outstanding LP – in a “Hi-Fi Stereo” edition – from Philips (835 055 AY, Dutch pressing, plum/silver label, glossy laminated jacket) features Arthur Grumiaux’s magnificent accounts of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 35 and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor Op. 64, both made with Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the warm acoustics of the Grote Zaal, Concertgebouw, in May 1960.
Two other accounts of the Tchaikovsky by Grumiaux bookend this with one with Haitink – there exists an earlier reading with Bogo Leskovich (VSO – rec. November 1956), as well as a later one with Jan Krenz (New Philharmonia – rec. September 1975). All three were made for Philips, but this 1960 version arguably represents the high-water mark in Grumiaux’s achievements with this score – there is Grumiaux’s trademark purity, but also a slavic ardor, too, perhaps bolstered by Haitink (a fine Tchaikovskian). The Mendelssohn is no less fine, brilliant and poetic, always buoyant and vital. This is exalted violin playing by any measure.
There are excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket – printed in German only. The striking cover photo of Grumiaux is similarly uncredited.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is minor bumping corners, as well as mild discoloration and general shelfwear. However, there are no seamsplits, owners’ marking, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is VERY GOOD+. Though surfaces are not silent, and there is a bit more surface noise (a few soft tics in the Mendelssohn), in general playback remains quite fine. However, if you must have flawless or NM surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
