First heard as an orchestral theme in Greg Tallas’ film AYOUPA (1957). It was also heard in Jules Dassin’s film NEVER ON SUNDAY (1960). First release.

Originally sung by Nana Mouskouri at the Third Song Festival organized by Greek Radio (July 1961).

3 IT’S THIRTEENTH OF THE MONTH  

Lyrics: Michael Cacoyannis, Vocals: Sophia Vembo
A 1955 release.
The original recording from Michael Cacoyannis’ film STELLA (1955) released for the first time on the LP 30 EXCEPTIONAL INTERPRETATIONS, No. 2 (1984). Sophia Vembo sang the song in the film.

4 MANDOLIN

A 1961 release.
Song from the score written for Luigi Pirandello’s play TONIGHT WE IMPROVISE performed by the Dimitris Myrat Company (1961).

5 GONE ARE THE DAYS 

Lyrics: Nikos Gatsos, Vocals: Grigoris Bithikotsis
A 1965 release.
Written in 1965, the song was later banned by the military dictatorship. New lyrics were written (entitled FIRST OF THE MONTH), and the composition was included on the LP THE EARTH’S GOLD (1971).

6 STREET OF DREAMS

First heard in the musical STREET OF DREAMS, given at the Metropolitan Theatre in June 1962

7 I’M AN EAGLE WITHOUT WINGS

Lyrics: Eftihia Papayanopoulou, Vocals: Grigoris Bithikotsis
A 1963 release.
Song written for Adamantios Panaretos (1961) but made famous by Grigoris Bithikotsis in the musical MAGICAL CITY (1963). The songs for this show were composed by Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis.

8 BETRAYED (A Misunderstanding)

A 1960 release.
First heard in Jules Dassin’s film NEVER ON SUNDAY (1960).

9 THE MISTRESS 

Lyrics: Manos Hadjidakis, Vocals: Grigoris Bithikotsis
A 1963 release.
As an orchestral theme, it was first heard in the comedy PLUTUS of Aristophanes in 1956, presented by the Art Theatre under the stage direction of Karolos Koun.
At a later date, Grigoris Bithikotsis recorded the song with lyrics for the musical MAGICAL CITY, staged at the Park Theatre in June 1963, and directed by Leonidas Trivizas. Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis wrote the songs for this show.
