HANK WILIAMS / THE GARDEN SPOT
UNIQUE RADIO TRANSCRIPTION
It was one of the most startling finds in country music in over a decade. Tucked away in among some rather dreary 16-inch transcriptions were three that really mattered. They revealed a total of nearly 45 minutes of previously unknown LIVE IN THE STUDIO recordings of Hank Williams.
The programs were sent out to a small number of radio stations under the name ‘The Garden Spot’ and were paid for by Naughton Farms, a mail-order nursery in Waco, Texas. The recordings themselves were cut at Castle Studios in Nashville, using studio musicians in January of 1950. This is a 16-inch transcription, and is pressed on vinyl.
The 15-minute program is hosted by Grand Ol’ Opry announcer Grant Turner of WSM (Nashville) and it’s kicked off with a re-worded version of “Oh! Susanna” that’s been turned into a commercial for Naughton Farms. Yeah, Hank Williams is singing the commercial.
The program makes its way thru four songs and stops down for the occasional plug to be inserted into the show to hustle those mail-order rose bushes.
This is the platter featuring Show #4 with Hank Williams and Show #3 with Milton Estes. On Hank's set you get “Lovesick Blues,” “A Mansion On The Hill,” a fiddle instrumental to get you back from commercials, then the sentimental “I’ve Just Told Mama Goodbye.” It closes out with the band doing an instrumental breakdown on the opening tune “Oh! Susanna.”
There’s a small, live audience, and Hank talks between all the tracks.
Check out the Omnivore release of this material under the name ‘The Garden Spot.’ This is the only known surviving transcription of this program, and is the one that Omnivore used for the mastering.
There is very little wear on the record and when played with just the right needle, you’ll find a really clear audio track. Of course, you don’t have to play it now, as that CD/LP release will serve that purpose well.
This is a unique Hank Williams treasure, the first of three which will be offered up in succession here.
