Von jungen Jahren an spielte Pirkner bei Admira Wien (mit zwei Kurzgastspielen in Klagenfurt und beim FAC), ehe er in die deutsche Bundesliga zu Schalke wechselte. Beim "Bundesligaskandal 1971" – handelte er sich eine Sperre vom 5. 8. 1972 bis 4. 8. 1974 und 2.300 DM Geldbuße ein. Wurde am 15. 8. 1973 vom Österreichischen Fußball-Bund begnadigt. Danach spielte er in Donawitz wo er Tor um Tor für die Obersteirer schoss. Bei der Austria spielte Hans Pirkner vier Jahre (1974-1978) und konnte dabei nicht weniger als zwei Meistertitel und einen Cupsieg verbuchen. Nach der WM 78 in Argentienien sagte Pirkner der Profi-Laufbahn adé.
