Description
THE MUSICAL STEVEDORES is a one-time gathering of some the finest New York African-American hot musicians in 1929. They seemed determined to make a unique and special record, and they happily succeeded. Some of the invitees are LOUIS METCALF (trumpet), CHARLIE HOLMES (soprano sax), CLIFF JACKSON (piano), ELMER SNOWDEN (banjo) and others.
"HAPPY RHTYHM" and "HONEYCOMB HARMONY" are thoughtful, delightful compositions by Spencer Williams - I presume he also is the arranger - which blend elements of modern harmony with "low down" rhythm. Both white and black bands were exploring this "third stream" style. Here is a rare sample of the Negro side of this.
I have graded this scarce, original 1929 "race" Columbia 14406-D V++ - mostly for slight surface damage. It plays closer to EE-.

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
