Rarity: Rare: the price guides hardly even come close, how often does this get seen or offered especially with a near perfect insert? A commercial non-starter, seldom seen or offered on any condition, especially complete. This my first ever copy in original red vinyl.

Brief Info: A very strange and obscure psych-based album from 1967. Initially issued on red vinyl but the black vinyl pressing is no less common. Hapshash & The Coloured Coat were best remembered for being designers. They produced some astonishing album covers in the 1960s including Art’s ‘Supernatural Fairy Tales’ and the brilliant psychedelic ‘Disraeli Gears’ by Cream. Also amazing colour psych posters from the same era. Being mainly graphic designers and artists, and not having much in the way of any musical background, under producer Guy Stevens with backing from Art, they made this album. Very raw with plenty of percussion and chants, this could easily have inspired the early sound of Amon Duul. Stoned acid-soaked sounds and psychedelia, all very trippy for the times, this album will appeal to fans of the aforementioned early incarnation of the underground Krautrock scene. The album features beautiful artwork that is fully laminated. This is the first issue red pressed version that includes the very rare and prized insert. A very spooky shiny silver and black card mini poster that is unmounted and almost as new. This will rarely be seen like this. The record has marks and grades very good, but all bar the last song on side one – a shorter chant track – play very well. The final song has a penetrating scratch that does sound as moderate clicks, so the record is not perfect for looks or sound, but due to its considerable rarity, impressive cover and fantastic insert, it has to be offered. With the majority playing very well with little unwanted, it will still please many collectors of the rare and unusual. If you enjoy trips into the psychedelic underground, this is for you, a rare opportunity indeed – also the cover and insert could prove considerable upgrades for some who do own a copy (or do not own the insert at all).

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A single, fully laminated cover that was printed and made in England. Includes the 1967 date-coded inner sleeve and the superb card insert.

Lamination – Front & Back: Great artwork that can still be admired under laminate both sides. This retains fine shine and clarity, there is some quite fine spine edge lifting and minor edge creases with just a couple or three small half moons away from. Under light, some reasonably mild surface dulling is seen with fine surface marks, but for a cover fast approaching fifty, this is in fine condition.

Top Edge: Very straight, smooth and unworn, no abrasions or wear.

Bottom Edge: Largely as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with little wear, a little thickening seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any compression mild. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and mostly uncracked laminate. Also very well centred on a quite narrow depth.

Corners: Small tip rubs only with very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: Gently aged and still very attractive, this very rare cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): a Polydor-style polylined inner, date-coded 097 (September 1967). A little aged with darkened edges as the seam adhesive browns. Two immaculate window circles,the lining reasonably clear. Little creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): and this being ultra conservative. Rarely seen or offered, and rarely better. This is black printed over silver and very fragile indeed, the back is plain off-white card, this only very lightly darkened near the sides (this being critical). Immensely fragile and prone to chipping, dulling and creasing, few will age better than this. Unmounted, barely creased and undamaged. The silver retains immense shine and freshness with hardly even surface marks, any few traces ultra fine and faint. No writing or enhancements – none needed – this is superb. This was designed by Nigel Waymouth and Michael English. Spooky, almost surreal images, do not under-estimate the rarity of this elusive insert. This is likely to prove an immense upgrade for collectors, or for those who own the album without it (of course).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD: as seen, pressed on original red vinyl. This has surface marks, some wispy and very fine, some showing more, but most are superficial with minimal to no audio affect. The one exception of note is a fine, but penetrating mark on the shorter final song on side one, a chant, which is arguably the least important track on the album. That is taking nothing away from the fact it is present and over half the track has moderate clicks. So clearly this is not a record for the more discerning collector, but with so few around and rarely seen or offered, sometimes a bit of give-and-take or compromise has to be given. Most of the marks are ignored and the record still offers very impressive sound, yes the final track is a clear flaw, but hardly fatal. Indeed with so few made or sold, this could indeed still take some beating. A fine example for the right collector – you decide.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare record plays above its high visual grading with little to fault bar the clicks on the final track on side one as mentioned clearly already. ‘Aoum’ has moderate clicks for over half its duration, at least. But overall, strong, distortion-free sound applies, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Very psychedelic and quite ‘out-there’, the main song ‘Empires of the Sun’ that occupies all side two, plays superbly with little unwanted – the odd sporadic click difficult to avoid, even on very clean looking records. Any other surface sounds are few and light, the red pressing itself is easily up the standard of a black copy. There were no tracking issues on my Linn Sondek*. The clicks on side one’s final track apart, little else spoilt the experience. Clearly not for the more discerning collectors, but a rare album, and if the clicks, which in terms of album duration, are relatively brief, are acceptable, this will please many collectors. Causiously recommended with the flaw scratch, but the cover and insert hopefully compensate.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
