This double album is one of the true psychedelic oddities of the 60's. Harumi was a Japanese acid freak who put out one of the wildest and most unbelievably ambitious recordings to come from the psychedelic era. Harumi (who sings and speaks in English), producer Tom Wilson, arrangers Harvey Vinson and Larry Fallon, and engineer Gary Kellegren assembled a tripped-out collection of pop, Eastern folk, and experimental music and production techniques, with sounds, textures, and atmospheres that incorporated everything from strings and horns to Japanese folk instruments to vibraphones and (of course) plenty of guitars and drums and organ. Of the 13 tracks on these two LPs, 11 are of conventional length and are utterly seductive in their hypnotic power and pop brilliance. The last two, "Twice Told Tales of the Pomegranate Forest" and "Samurai Memories," are 24 minutes and 18 minutes long, respectively. These two have plenty of cosmic spoken word by Wilson, hip New York Dj 'Rosko' and Harumi, and on the past by his parents and his sister. The first of these, the longer one, is a bit difficult to take with its slow pace, minimal orchestration, and nearly nonsensical story. The second one, with its discotheque go-go boots beat and orchestration, phased sounds, and Japanese language, is an exotic masterpiece. It grooves throughout, especially when the electric guitars and strings play counterpoint to one another. Simply put, there is nothing at all like this record in the known universe. It has been compared to the adventurousness of the Mothers of Invention, but only insofar as its wide range. The music here, while a huge compendium of sources, is unlike anything you have ever heard when it is put together.

  GRADING CVR/DISC

  NEAR MINT-  (NM-): A nearly perfect record. No obvious sign of wear. Looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap. Faintest, tiniest wisp of a hint of a suggestion of whiff of a sleeve mark allowable.

  EXCELLENT: (EX): A superior  record with no more than a wisp of a hairline, faint shadowing, or a superficial needle drag. None of these defects are glaring, and certainly do not affect play. 

• VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+): Played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have light scuffs or very light scratches that might slightly affect, but do not overpower, one’s listening experience. Very slight warps that do not affect play are OK.
  

• VERY GOOD (VG): Many of the defects found in a VG+ record are more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during the song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.
