HASSID / RICCI – 1938/40 RECORDINGS – HMV Treasury – Cat. No. EH 29 12301
This 1987 mono issue made in the UK is on the late semi-circle label in the HMV Treasury series entitled "The Complete Hassid / The Young Ricci" catalogue number EH 29 12301. Side 1 contains the complete 1940 recordings (including a 1939 test recording) by the legendary violinist, Josef Hassid (1923-1944). The original 78rpm recordings have been transferred to LP for the first time on this disc. According to the sleeve notes Hassid was a boy Wunderkind with unique individual sound and peerless technique – of whom Kreisler remarked, "A fiddler such as Heifetz is born every hundred years; one like Hassid every two hundred years"). Side 2 contains 7 tracks of 1938 recordings by Ruggiero Ricci (also transferred from 78s).
The disc is so pristine that it may possibly never have been played – for that reason we have not listened to it (although sorely tempted to hear the magic ourselves! The sleeve is near mint. There is also a cutting of a Gramophone magazine review from Dec.1987.
