Description
Muana Kea Breeze. Original copy on the Century Custom label. Sleeve is VG+. Disc is VG++ but playgrade is G- due to soft jumps on the first track, side one (I've MP3'd this entire track so you can hear, it's the 2nd clip below). Remainder of LP plays strong with super light edge warp. Originals were poorly mastered and vinyl is ultra-sensitive, a fine hairline on first track is what's causing these jumps! And is exactly the reason I believe this album is so rare... I've had, or played 4 copies now ( I got two from band members) and 3 of them had the same pressing issue. I'm guessing most fans who bought copies at their 60's gigs just tossed em after they stopped working.
Anywaaay, aside from the Paul Page stuff, this is the only full-length custom label Exotica LP that I'm aware of from the mainland. (I don't count the Tiki Gardens LP, I see that as more of a theme park souvenir). The group recorded it in their San Jose, CA garage circa '64 after relocating from the Big Island. This is a second generation Exotica group, their granddad also had a group predating Lyman/Denny and the family were/are long time friends with these two artists. The sound is classic, low key, breezy Exotica front to back with bird calls, ocean sound effects, etc., and I firmly believe that if they had had the right exposure theyd've been signed to a Hi-Fi, Liberty or Somerset-type label. Really good music and the garage-y recording sound adds to it for me. I've added a clip of title track below...kinda has an Eden Ahbez "Old Boat" sound...Very, very rare LP!
