HAWKWIND
In Search Of Space
ORIGINAL UK UNITED ARTISTS (UAG 29202) FIRST PRESSING (October 1971) OF HAWKWIND'S SPACE/PROG MASTERPIECE "In Search Of Space" IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION (barely played, two or three light spindle traces on the labels, at most) AND DELIVERING BEAUTIFULLY CLEAN, NEAR MINT AUDIO THROUGHOUT - WHICH IS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO FIND AS THE LP HAS MANY VERY QUIET MOMENTS WHICH ARE COMMONLY SPOILT BY EXCESSIVE SURFACE NOISE - BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST AND CLEANEST SOUNDING COPIES I HAVE HEARD IN A WHILE - FANTASTIC COPY AND THEY REALLY DON'T COME MUCH BETTER (AND AS THE FIRST PRESSING IT HAS THE CONTINUOUS PLAY INTO THE SIDE ONE RUN-OFF GROOVE)
PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST BEIGE UA LABELS
FIRST ISSUE MATRICES: UAG 29202 A-1U / UAG 29202 B-1U
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 1/GA and 1/GG
THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL FOLD OUT SLEEVE WITH INTERNAL LYRICS "Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford"
WITH THE ORIGINAL FIRST ISSUE 24 PAGE LOG BOOK PRINTED ON DELICATE TEXTURED PAPER WITH DARK BLUE INK
AND THE SET COMES COMPETE WITH THE ORIGINAL PLAIN WHITE INNER SLEEVE WITH UK PATENT NUMBER AND "MADE IN ENGLAND" TEXT PRINTED IN SILVER
In Search of Space strengthened Hawkwind's science fiction-type brand of progressive rock, gaining bass player Dave Anderson and galactic poet extraordinaire Rob Calvert, while losing John Harrison at the same time.
The album opens with the mind-numbing galactic haze of "You Shouldn't Do That," a spooky little 15-minute excursion that warps, throbs, and swirls with Dik Mik's "audio generator" and the steady drum pace of Terry Ollis.
Then comes the ominous whispering of the title, set to the pulsating waves of Dave Brock's guitar and Turner's alto sax, with Dettmar's synth work laying the foundation.
Wonderfully setting the tone, "You Shouldn't Do That"'s improvisational looseness and rhythmic fusion smoothly open up the album into the realm of Hawkwind.
The peculiarity never ceases, as "You Know You're Only Dreaming" and "We Took the Wrong Steps Years Ago" delves even deeper into obscurity, sometimes emanating with the familiar jangle of the guitar which then has its acquaintance overshadowed by the waft of the keyboard.
Just as "Master of the Universe" chugs and rolls with a foreboding rhythm, "Adjust Me" retaliates with its moaning verse and tonal fluctuations fading into oblivion.
The groundbreaking sound which Hawkwind achieved on In Search of Space helped to open up a whole new avenue of progressive rock
Track Listing:
Side 1: You Shouldn't Do That / You Know You're Only Dreaming
Side 2: Master Of The Universe / We Took The Wrong Step Years Ago / Adjust Me / Children Of The Sun
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright, fresh and unmarked with just one, possibly two light spindle traces - this copy has clearly seen little play
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked and shine like new. There are one or two very light and superficial brush marks but these have no audio consequence - the record sounds sensational
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio delivery in all respects with a crystal clear, deep, rich, warm and detailed sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this one) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks or pops and barely any surface noise (really hardly anything worth a mention and to be incredibly picky, maybe just a touch on the run-ins). This is a beautifully clean pressing (and I must emphasise again how difficult it is to find a copy which plays this well). The whole LP sounds absolutely stunning and plays to just about the highest possible standard with superb clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion (it's hardly been played) and is very strictly graded a strong NEAR MINT for audio - great copy
SLEEVE: The fold-out sleeve with internally printed lyrics is again, in fantastic condition with no damage to the delicate interlocking sections and only a few light creases. The edges are practically unworn and all text on the (thin) spine is clear and bold. A superb example of this easily worn, marked and creased original sleeve - EXCELLENT+
LOG BOOK: This first issue log book is printed on thin textured paper in dark blue ink. It's in beautiful condition, no real signs of handling at all - NEAR MINT
