On offer here is a VERY rare LP (especially in this condition!!!!) by Haystacks Balboa called "Haystacks Balboa" and is an ORIGINAL 1970 UK 1st Pressing on the 1st Press Polydor label!!!! One of those very rare crossover heavy psych/prog records that initiated the period of heavy rock and prog rock. This fabulous crossover music was only made in a very small time frame from roughly 1967 to 1971. Haystacks Balboa went under the radar which was fully undeserved because this is some of the strongest material available from the time, easily on par with Cream, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc.

 THIS LP IS SERIOUSLY RARE AND VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND!!!!  THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST LPs ON THE POLYDOR LABEL - AND VIRTUALLY NEVER TURNS UP FOR SALE!!!!  JUST TRY AND FIND ANOTHER ONE!!!!  BACK IN 1970 WHEN THIS LP WAS FIRST RELEASED - IT ONLY EVER SOLD IN ABSOLUTELY TINY AMOUNTS, AND WAS ALMOST IMMEDIATELY DELETED!!!!  AS A RESULT IT IS SERIOUSLY RARE AND INCREDIBLY HARD TO LOCATE TODAY!!!!  NOT ONLY THAT BUT THIS LP IS IN BRILLIANT CONDITION - AND HAS BARELY BEEN PLAYED AT ALL!!!!  JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THE PICTURES!!!!

This is the ORIGINAL Polydor UK 1st pressing from 1970 and is in BRILLIANT condition!!!!  The record is pressed on THICK quality vinyl.  The Cat. No is 2489 002 on the ORIGINAL 1st Press Polydor label (see picture) and is a UK Stereo 1st Pressing

“Auburn Queen” starts out as a mellow acoustic track and then jumps into a jittery The Nice type of feel that sounds a lot like the intro of Metallica’s “Don’t Tread On Me” which of course came from the track “America” from West Side Story. It also has a Wishbone Ash / Allman Brothers type of duo lead assault and a killer keyboard solo. This is the most proggy sounding and ties for longest track (with “Ode To The Silken Men” on the album providing a glimpses of how proto-prog was slipping into the fully developed symphonic prog world the same year other bands like Yes were unleashing their magnifying prowess. The ending is the most progressive part as it takes an odd guitar lick, offbeat percussion and a litany of shouted poetry.

What really clicks with me and this album is the nice mix of influences. The bouncy happy-go-lucky Paul McCartney riffs and vocal playfulness accompanied by beautiful melodies, diverse vocal acrobatics, Zeppelin heavy metal riffing alternating with more mellow folky passages all dished out in a progressive manner but still in psych territory as well, hit my pleasure zone upon first listen and hasn’t diminished its return value upon repeated listens. The beauty of this is that these guys were doing the things that made bands like Zeppelin and Queen made famous very shortly after this was released, this was a true surprise that if taken in the context of the time it was in, this is some pretty stellar early heavy prog rock going on here. 

I really wish this band would have stuck around for a while longer because this debut points to myriad directions and all of them would have been interesting. Despite being called typical hard rocker / heavy psyche sound for the era, i find this one to be all over the place which is more diverse than almost any similar band of this year. Highly recommended to early heavy rock lovers with a diverse palette. All musicians on here play together quite well and unlike many heavier bands of this era, i really like the vocals a lot. An interesting snapshot into the transition of late 60s heavy psych into 70s heavy prog with a nice balance of both sides of the equation.

 

 

I have played this in FULL> The replay is ASTOUNDING!!! There are not any jumps, pops or skips.  Very remarkable for this 1970 vinyl!!! This copy has barely been played. The heavy vinyl with high groovewalls provide a fantastic audio experience with channelling not equalled by the later re-issue. I played this on my Technics turntable with a Linn cartridge and through my very revealing B&W three way speakers!!! A beautiful CLASSIC with supreme songcraft, a joy to listen to!!!!

!!!!A VERY HARD FIND!!! Most have been bought up by collectors!! This is hardly offered these days as an original first press!! Rare as hen's teeth!

 Sensational sound quality, I have played this through in its entirety and it was a great joy!!! NO skips or jumps. NO clicks or crackle, this is really a stunning heavy glossy jet black vinyl .The audio is impeccable. Inspected under an intense lightsource and angled.

                       

Vinyl:  NM .  A sensational find and barely played!!! Only my second LP this year deserving this highest of grades (I do not use M). I have played this in FULL twice over> The replay is ASTOUNDING!!! I first played for a general listen and a second time for a more detailed observation.  Fantastic songcraft!! A personal favourite of mine and I am very glad to be able to report that this is a fine slab of vinyl without any problems at all and as such worthy of inclusion of any great prog collection. This will be an ultimate upgrade version for most collectors.  Outstanding audio delivery in all respects with a crystal clear, deep, rich, warm and detailed sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this one) there is no discernable surface noise. This is a beautifully clean pressing . The whole LP sounds absolutely great and plays to a high standard with superb clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion and is very strictly graded a strong NM  for audio without anything untoward, no static or crackle at all - great copy!! Of course, NO skips, NO jumps, NO ticks.

 

 Sleeve: EX.  Front and back laminated. The sleeve has no creasing (apart from the miniscule obligatory spinal ones, see pic.) One tiniest of pin prick "nicks" to the top left (see pic.) Otherwise a beautiful sleeve fully deserving an EX rating. Rich colours, fully readable spine, 100% edges and a crisp opening. NO split, NO writing, NO tears etc.

Labels: NM!!! Unmarked. these are the very desirable large mad hatter labels.  None scarcer though than this label!! I doubt we will see this again this year or the next! There is still some vinyl debris on the spindle hole indicating that this has indeed barely been played.Please look at the pics!!
