From the Internet: Ernest Ansermet (born November 11, 1883 died February 20, 1969) was one of Decca's staple of conductors in the 1950s and 1960s when he recorded this set of Beethoven symphonies with L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. It repesents the height of his achievement as a Beethoven interpreter. Ansermet created the Swiss orchestra after World War I and recruited its members, so it represented the sound he wanted. Critics and professional musicians in the United States have made a career out of denigrating the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (i.e., the Geneva-based orchestra of the French-speaking western quarter of Switzerland). Both the orchestra and its longtime conductor, Ernest Ansermet, have been derided by the cultural elite as second-rate. I fell for this line myself for many years until I read a review by John McKelvey, longtime music critic for the American Record Guide. In fact, these recordings are among the finest ever made of Beethoven symphonies. Most notable is the outstanding job the recording engineers did in capturing the woodwind instruments, which are usually drowned out in other recordings. Ansermet's conducting has bite, vitality, and power - and his orchestra can match any. Many rank the Carlos Kleiber recording of the Beethoven 7th as the best. However, Ansermet's is also spectacular and is in that league. What about the mighty Beethoven 9th? To me, this is the quintessential 9th, bursting with life and passion. The finale 4th movement (chorale) in this recording is nothing short of spectacular. The chorus and all four soloists give outstanding performances: bass Arnold van Mill, tenor Anton Dermota, alto Norma Procter. Dame Joan Sutherland soars magnificently on the soprano parts of the quartet. What is truly amazing to me is the fact that this 9th was originally recorded in 1959 (!!).Well although  the strings might seem a bit thin in places to some (but really not bad at all), the basses and woodwinds really shine in this recording. Ansermet's crisp, up-tempo interpretation of the score is one of the best ever, in my estimation, and not to be missed! These are superb recordings for your record library, and hard to find all nine symphonies on LP. Grab them. You won't be sorry.
