Do not underestimate Markevitch in the Tchaikovsky symphonies; they are both delicate and supercharged! Time and again these PHILIPS recordings please. Stereo separation and soundstage spread add to the pleasure. Many conductors have tried their hand at recording individual Tchaikovsky symphonies, and a few have recorded complete sets. But the Markevitch interpretations draw you back with a much greater depth of rewarding detail and insight. And there is that magnificent vintage orchestra, the London Symphony of the 1960s. The playing is invigoratingly alert, precisely defined and the brass deliver irresistibly emphasized drama: DON'T MISS IT!
