Munich collective Karl Hector & The Malcouns continue their exploration of krautrock's outer reaches on a record that draws a clear line back to hometown pioneers Amon Duul, Popol Vuh and Embryo. Led by JJ Whitefield and Zdenko Curulija, the group blend motorik rhythms, psychedelic funk and kosmische atmospherics into a set that rarely sits still for long. 'Go Caravan!' and 'Space Race' ease listeners into the journey before 'Mellow Skyfall' and the title track drift into more expansive territory. Elsewhere, 'Zen///topia' balances hypnotic groove with cosmic textures, while 'Love Is The Key', 'Crimson Dune' and 'Sahara Sepp' push further into desert-funk and space-rock territory. Retro in source material perhaps, though the band's commitment to exploration keeps everything feeling alive and present.
