Description

From the personal collection of Helen Ward, this rarity is a 10" 78 rpm metal acetate test pressing. To my knowledge, this session has never been issued. It was recorded in Chicago on 16 May 1953. 3 tunes were recorded on this date possibly for a 45 rpm EP release. This was at the time that the Benny Goodman Band (without Benny) was touring jointly with the Louis Armstrong All Stars. The band that accompanies Helen is drawn from both groups.  The musicians are Charlie Shavers (trumpet), Georgie Auld (tenor sax), Trummy Young (trombone), Roy Kral (a Chicago local on piano), Steve Jordan (guitar), Israel Crosby (bass) and Cozy Cole (drums). The tunes on this disc are "Get Out; Don't Slam My Door" and "When You Make Love To Me". There are excellent solos by both Shavers and Auld as well as a vocal duet of Helen and Trummy Young on "Get Out". The disc is in VG+ condition with a few scuffs and it plays with excellent fidelity. As is typical with these types of acetates each side starts with some audible surface noise but soon quiets down. For reasons unknown to me, the second side does not have any run out grooves so as soon as the tune ends the needle will slide to the center of the disc. This is not a problem with the first side as it has run out grooves. There is no information printed on the disc as both sides are blank in the label area.  The photo shows stuff in the label area but these are reflections in the photo and not on the disc. I have listed the date and personnel above from notes in Helen's files which are NOT included with the disc. . Be sure to view my other listings for the 3rd title from this unissued session. Shipping in the USA at $6.00 for Priority Mail. Overseas mail will require a quote according to destination. Insurance is recommeded always as I cannot be responsible for Postal loss.
