The Apple Bed is Haircut One Hundred legend Nick Heyward's sixth solo album and third and final album of the 90s. To release The Apple Bed in 1998, Heyward signed with Alan McGee's Creation Records, who was impressed when he saw him play live in London. Compared with the album that preceded it - Tangled - there's a much rockier feel to The Apple Bed. The single 'Today' has a guitar sound that wouldn't be amiss in Oasis and 'The Man You Used To Be' is one of the most underrated songs of the Britpop era. Elsewhere, 'Stars In Her Eyes' extends the horizons incorporating multiple layers and textures with a song that rivals the likes of Travis and Doves. Compared with the sophisti pop of Haircut One Hundred, it's a completely different kettle of fish but it reflects well on the strength of Heyward's musicality that he was able to pull off styles from across the pop spectrum to the highest level.
