Description

Juan Hidalgo "Rrose Sélavy" LP issued by Cramps Records (CRSLP 6113) for the Nova Musicha series (No. 13) in Italy, 1977. Gatefold sleeve. ****** Rec:m- / Cov:ex ****** Hidalgo was a leading figure of the Spanish avant-garde who composed the first electronic music piece in Spain, worked with sound poetry, prepared instruments and various other extensions. "Rrose Selavy" is a simple yet brilliant piece of progressive minimalism in which a new repetitive rhythm is brought in by a new instrument every track, essentially you're hearing the same piece over and over, just more complex each time until it reaches its cacophonous conclusion after six tracks. It's incredibly simplistic in idea but it's actually a surprisingly original listen. This is obviously dedicated to Marcel Duchamp and is littered with references to him; it's not totally unlikely that this was inspired by Duchamp's "Erratum Musicale" or similar pieces. "Rrose Selavy" is probably more relative to the Nurse With Wound list of influences than "Tamaran" is, but they're both worth hearing. Hidalgo is a composer and multimedia artist who studied under John Cage, Nadia Boulanger, David Tudor, and Bruno Maderna, was influenced by Zen Buddhism, Marcel Duchamp, Erik Satie, Buenaventura Durruti, and futurist F.T. Marinetti, worked with Max Neuhaus and Herman Nitsch, and with Walter Marchetti, Ramon Barce, and Esther Ferrer founded the ZAJ group (the Spanish wing of the Fluxus movement, associated with Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Milan Knizak, Joseph Beuys, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Philip Corner, Richard Maxfield, Emmett Williams, Paul Panhuysen, Takehisa Kosugi, La Monte Young, etc.). He was one of the artists of Gino di Maggio’s Galleria Multhipla and collaborates with Cramps label founder Gianni Sassi on the annual MILANO-POESIA festival. Marchetti is an Italian conceptual artist and experimental composer who worked with John Cage, Morton Feldman, Leopoldo La Rosa, Jose Luis Castillejo, and Bruno Maderna and attended the famous Darmstadt courses in the 50s alongside Stockhausen, Evangelisti, Nono, Boulez, Goeyvaerts, Messiaen, Ligeti, etc. This LP was released on the legendary Cramps label, home of the Nova Musicha and DIVerso series which also featured John Cage, Area, Fernando Grillo, Derek Bailey, Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, Demetrio Stratos, Mario Schiano, Steve Lacy, Cornelius Cardew, Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, Petr Kotik... ****** Very minimal cover wear (see photo). ****** Please wait to receive my invoice before sending the payment after the auction ends.
