HIGHLY RARE – BEATLES YESTERDAY & TODAY ‘TRUNK COVER’ EP (FRENCH ODEON MEO 134)

 

In June 1966 Capitol Records found themselves in hot water when the Beatles 9th US album ‘Yesterday & Today’ had to be briefly re-called due to its perceived offensive cover (known today as the ‘Butcher Cover’).

 

A photo session in Brian Epstein’s NEMS Ltd office in London was hastily convened during which a series of photos were taken centred around a large packing trunk. A photo was chosen by Capitol from this session for the new Yesterday & Today album which had Paul McCartney sat inside the trunk with the other three Beatles standing around it. This photo then had the background removed by the Capitol Records Art Department leaving the backdrop plain white.

 

This highly rare French EP features a photo rejected by Capitol from this ‘Yesterday & Today’ session which actually has both John Lennon and Paul sitting in the trunk with George and Ringo standing behind. This picture is also significant as the background has not been removed.

 

French Odeon issued this EP (MEO 134) in early 1967 with four 1966 recorded tracks:

 

Strawberry Fields Forever (recorded 24th November 1966)

And Your Bird Can Sing (recorded 12th May 1966)

Penny Lane (recorded 29th December 1966)

I’m Only Sleeping (recorded 12th May 1966)

 

The disc excellent condition, sleeve is mint.
