Chicago-born pianist Andrew Hill reaches a sharp creative peak on this 1965 session, one that filters his abstract instincts through a hard and rhythmic centre. Drawing on African-rooted pulse, the writing stays tightly wound with ideas driven forward by pressure and drag. The title track arrives with urgency, Hill's percussive attack setting the terms as Freddie Hubbard and John Gilmore carve clean lines across the surface. 'Legacy' applies greater force, its momentum secured by Cecil McBee and Joe Chambers as the music locks into forward motion. On the flip, 'Premonition' loosens time, allowing space to gather, while 'Limbo' closes in a state of unresolved balance. Brief and concentrated, the set captures Hill at his most focused and exacting.
