This album was produced by Lelan Rodgers (of the International Artists label) and recorded in Memphis, Tennessee. The origins of the band have been the subject for speculation over the years. It was suggested that they were from Oklahoma, then Mark Opsasnich's book 'Capitol Rock' (a fine tome on the Washington D.C. scene) mooted that they were possibly from that region and included D.C. guitarist Pete "Peaches" Williams. Well, from the personnel and reproduced LP sleeve notes on the Dodo reissue, the latter appears to be borne out. The notes were written by a Charlie Brown (DJ for WOL radio in Washington) who reports that he first encountered the band recording demos at a studio in Silver Springs, Maryland. He says he also suggested to their manager that they be called The D.C. Sanitation Department (?!). OK, that's sorted..... what about the music? Reputedly it's a "good hard rock album with lots of acid guitar". It turns out to be decent hard rock with occasional meandering leads, Hendrixisms and outbursts of wah-wah... but what hits you in the face is the gritty soulful vocals and a tough funky edge. Regrettably, the album closes with a 7'00" version of Oh Happy Day, the negro spiritual. That aside, there is certainly much to recommend here.-FUZZ, ACID & FLOWERS
