This auction is for an LP made for the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) for airplay only...NEVER commercially available.
This rare album features two sets of amazing jazz recorded live at the 1963 Montreal Jazz Festival.
One side has the J.J. Johnson Quartet (29:30), the other has the Martial Solal Trio (29:40).
I can't find a hint that either of these sets were EVER made available to the public outside of what would have certainly been very limited airplay in 1963 or 1964. In fact, the album label states an expiration date of Dec. 31, 1964. That means it was not intended to be played after that date. I've no idea how many copies of this were pressed, but it would definitely be a tiny number as these were made for CBC radio station use only.
I've listened to the J.J. Johnson Quartet side and it sounds amazing...that was a special show! A narrator mentions that the compositions played were created by Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk. Johnson played with both of those masters in this same time frame. 1963 was a landmark year for J.J. Johnson, producing some of his best works.
You could be one of the first people to hear this music of jazz greats in their prime in more than 45 years! Think about that for a second.
I have found no comparable sales for unreleased J.J. Johnson LPs. I know it's a special piece of jazz history and it needs to find a special home.
