Vinyl: A set of 2 boxes. Vol. 2 is factory sealed, Vol. 1 records are in beautiful Near Mint condition – with one exception: Side SMS 6.236 (with Friedrich Gulda) shows a deep, suspicious scratch. Why suspicious? I have another set listed with the exact same flaw: perfect NM surfaces, and then a sudden, isolated scratch on one side. I strongly suspect a pressing defect, possibly due to unskilled handling during manufacture of this edition.
However, the sides featuring Alexander Sellier are visually unplayed and appear perfectly preserved – clean surfaces, pristine gloss, no signs of playing.
✨ About Alexander Sellier – Why these sides are special Alexander Sellier (geb. 1924, Saarlouis) was a German concert pianist and professor at the Hochschule für Musik Saar. Though virtually unknown to the broader public today, his recordings have reached legendary status among collectors of rare European pressings.
His playing is marked by:
Elegant clarity
Structural depth
Highly refined interpretations of Viennese classics, especially Beethoven
He recorded only a handful of albums, many of them in extremely limited pressings, including:
Trois Sonates pour Piano (Lumen LD 3.446, France) – now considered one of the rarest mono piano LPs ever issued
Les Grands Classiques Allemands du Piano (Club National Du Disque, CND 48)
Beethoven Sonatas 7, 9 & 10 (Concert Hall SMS 6.236) – the very edition offered here
This is how I grade (GGS, Goldmine Grading Standard);
Mint : You can expect a unplayed record!
Near Mint : You can expect a record which has been played once and is absolutely flawless!
Very Good++ : You can expect a record which is super clean, fine and has TENDER surface marks or scuffs.
Everything below that will be described precisely, by me, for your satisfaction.
