Homeboy Sandman has never quite hit the commercial heights of some of his Queens contemporaries, but his catalogue - which now runs to ten solo albums, countless collaborations and tons of must-check EPs - is full to bursting with high-quality underground hip-hop treats. There In Spirit, a mini-album produced by Detroit beat-maker Illingsworth and presented here on "dreamsicle" coloured vinyl, maintains that impressive standard, with the sometime Stones Throw artist delivering astute, surprisingly astute observations over imaginative, sample-rich backing tracks that sit somewhere between the dusty soulfulness of the great, great J Dilla and the angular, skittish, mind-mangling sounds of the infamous L.A beat scene. It all adds up to a genuinely must-check release from a mic man who's still at the top of his game.
