Description
HOT MIX RL Led Zeppelin II 1969 on Atlantic Records SD 8236 with early 1841 Broadway address on labels and original Atlantic inner sleeve.
Infamous Robert Ludwig HOT MIX with "RL" and "SS" etched in dead wax on BOTH SIDES.
The Robert Ludwig additions of this 1st U.S. pressing are typically in well used and abused condition, this one is a rarity!!
Preswell Record Presing Plant in Ancora New Jersey as indicated by the "PR" on the labels.
VINYL in VG+ condition overall. Side A is VERY Strong VG, right on the border of VG+. There are a few light hairlines and scuffs, the very beginning has a repeating click for about three or four rotations. There is light background crackle throughout and occasional pop. The crackle does not interfere with the music, even during quieter segments, like the fade out of "Thank You". When the music is rocking, this thing busts out of the speakers, a real treat!
Side B is VG++ condition, a few very light surface scuffs only, sound quality is the best I have ever heard on this release, clean and powerful, super nice!!!
COVER in strong VG condition, corner bumps, staining on white areas, spine has yellowing and light rubbing but still readable and intact. The top seam has rubbing and some chipping, bottom seam has 1 1/2" split at opening, rubbing and chipping near spine. The outside edge of the gatefold has rubbing and chipping.
INNER SLEEVE has yellowing, split in middle of bottom seam, creasing.
Notes
US 1st pressing (with the 1841 Broadway address on the labels), featuring Robert Ludwig's "hot" mastering on both sides. These were withdrawn early because the high bass levels caused low-grade cartridges to mistrack, leading people to return the album on the belief that it was defective. Another engineer was then hired to recut a much less "hot" version of the album, and that is the far more common version. On some copies the Sterling Sound credit, "SS", appears in both runouts following Ludwig's "RL", and on others the "SS" appears only in the Side Two runout. The "RL" will still appear in both runouts.
This sub should only be used for copies with "RL" in both runouts. Later transitional pressings which featuring "RL" on only one side and another engineer's work on the other should receive their own subs.
