Description
This is a very good U.S. pressing copy of the debut LP by H.P. Lovecraft. Originally from Chicago, the group relocated to the Bay Area where they played the various ballrooms (a fine archival recording of a May 1968 gig at the Fillmore was released in the early '90s). Like a lot of the original San Francisco bands, the group's sound was rooted in folk, and the debut features covers of songs by Fred Neil and Randy Newman, and group leader George Edwards' reworking of the traditional folk ballad "Wayfaring Stranger" (which had been Burl Ives' theme song two decades earlier), along with several original compositions. The standout among the latter is the six and a half minute "White Ship" (a track based on the writings of the group's namesake, the early 20th century fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft), which like "Wayfaring Stranger" was released as a single. This copy has a variant colored label, and per Discogs is "probably" from "an early [1967] repress." The jacket has a couple of long creases on the front cover, ring wear and scuffing, corner wear, and light seam wear (VG+). Visually, the disc has a fair amount of hairline scratches and scrapes, scuffing, and loss of glossiness. It plays better than it looks, however: side 1 plays with light surface noise and occasional light crackling, while side 2 plays with crackling at the start of track 1, and after that with mostly light surface noise -- overall VG(+).
I’m in the process of selling off a large personal collection amassed over two decades. All discs have been stored in plastic lined inner sleeves separate from their jackets. The jackets have been stored in plastic sleeves. I have play graded (spot checked) discs except where otherwise noted.
