Description

In May, we sold a copy of BLP 1568 without the New York23 label on Side 2 – usually regarded as the original issue. In its description, we said that the “NY23 label on BLP 1568 is an anomaly and not indicative of an original.” Here is strong support for that claim. This is the deep-groove RVG-stamped “P”-pressing of Hank Mobley on the West 63rd (no “INC”) labels of Blue Note BLP 1568. Neither labels is NY23 and both labels are stamped with the early, rarely seen “FOR PROMOTION” font. Other than three light unobtrusive tics on Track 1 Side 2, the playing surface is in near-new condition, with a high luster; perhaps played once. The laminated West 63 St. cover is bright and clean throughout, with minor wear at the corners; the top of the back slick is also stamped “FOR PROMOTION” with the same early font; very slight less-than-1/16” wear along 2 ½” of the opening edge on the back slick; neat repair to a 3” break in the center of the spine. Questions of whether Blue Note pressings are “original” are common, particularly among later issues when the deep-groove center was randomly used. However, some of the earlier issues, such as BLP 1568, have had few discussions, since the details that usually determine an “original” are well known. This is a case in point of a detail that challenges the common notion of an original BLP 1568. Personnel include Bill Hardman, Curtis Porter, Sonny Clark, Paul Chambers, and Art Taylor.
