Album Notes
Opal includes: Kendra Smith, David Smith.Opal came out of the West Coast's psychedelic-influenced "Paisley Underground" scene, and was something of a supergroup, featuring Dream Syndicate's Kendra Smith on vocals and Rain Parade's David Roback on guitar. While their early recordings featured hushed, dreamy tunes ? la the Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning," 1987's HAPPY NIGHTMARE BABY is a souped-up slice of chugging psychedelic rock. Smith still employs a deliciously detached, Nico-like tone, but Roback pumps up the volume, dropping hints of everything from the Stooges and Hawkwind to the VU's "White Light White Heat." It was to be the band's last hurrah, though, as Smith soon departed, and Roback went on to form the considerably more successful Mazzy Star with singer Hope Sandoval.
