LP GRADING GUIDELINES

FS= Factory Sealed

NM + Near Mint. Records appear in new condition. No spindle trails. No surface mars. Should play as new.

NM- Near Mint Minus.  A scrupulously cared for used record with a minimum of surface mars and spindle trails. There could be a few odd tics but no more. All listeners with sensitive systems may not be satisfied but most will be.

NM/VG+ = Near Mint/Very Good Plus.  A step down from NM. These records may have one area of low level recurring noise. The most sensitive listeners with sensitive systems may not be satisfied but most will be.

VG+/NM = Very Good plus/Near Mint. Records may have 2 or 3 areas of low level recurring noise. Casual or non-critical listeners should be satisfied. Sensitive listeners probably will not be.

VG+ = Very Good plus. A typical well-used record. Plays well. It will probably have several noisy areas but interested listeners should be satisfied.

VG+/VG = Very good plus/Very good.  There will probably be many areas of noise. No skips or stuck grooves. Enjoyment will depend on listener’s sensitivity and motivation.

VG = Very Good. Noise will likely be constant and/or severe. Listeners must be extremely motivated to enjoy these records. A VG copy of rare early momo material may suffice for many listeners.

G = Good. Record barely plays. It should be viewed only as a stopgap. Most collectors would allow ‘G’ records in their collections only of rare early mono material and then only until a better copy comes along.

JACKET GRADING GUIDELINES

NM  Generally in new condition

NMVG+ One or two minor defects such as corner wear or slight ringwear or slight soiling.

VG+/NM There may be a variety of problems: Ringwear, corner wear, but generally in good condition.

VG+ Probably has more wear. Corner damage and possibly a variety of taped or split seams.

G & P Just plain bad jackets. Might be in two pieces.

NOTE: Specific defects like writing on cover (WOC) and labels on cover (LOC), taped seams and split seams (TS and SS), cut corner (CC) are specifically noted when present. When these defects are noted, the jacket grade refers to the cover alone, i.e. a NM cover could have taped seams and split seams.
