This is truly a piece of rock and roll history. My best friends dad was Hayden Thompson. Early Sun Records rockabilly artist. Hayden passed away back at the end of December. His son tasked me with selling some of his personal collection including his own recordings on acetate, test pressings, and records. I will be auctioning off a variety of records over the next few weeks.
Thought I'd start it off with a bang!! Hayden recorded 8 tracks at Sun Records in 1956. Most of which were backed by Billy Lee Riley's band. The only record released by Sam Phillips was Haydens cover of Love My Baby backed by One Broken Heart on the Phillips International label. The other recordings have shown up over time on various Sun compilations.
This is a 100% original Sun Records test pressing of Fairlane Rock backed with You Are My Sunshine. Two of the unreleased songs Hayden recorded. This is the ONLY Sun test pressing that Hayden kept. Unfortunately most of Haydens original records in his collection were used as skeet after his career didn't turn out quite like he thought it would. The record is VG- at best. Hayden did not take very good care of his records.... It plays well with no skips but significant background noise. True to Sam Phillips cheapness, he was still using Memphis Recording Service labels for his test pressings even after he had changed the name to Sun. The record has the tell tale Sam Phillips 3 - 78 stamper holes under the label that famously created the "pushmarks" on early Sun 45's (because Sam was too cheap to buy a 45 stamper......). The song names on the labels slightly differ from the final song titles we know today. No cracks, label tears, or writing on labels. I pack bullet proof. All 78's will be packed between hard cardboard and packed in an oversize box with peanuts. If you want to contact me for more clips, or photos feel free!
