This lavish LP set – a still-sealed copy – from RCA’s Soria Series (LD-2513, US pressing, red/silver label, mono, heavy cardboard jacket with booklet) features that glorious account of Brahms’s Double Concerto Op. in A minor Op. 102 – pairing Jascha Heifetz with Gregor Piatigorsky, with Alfred Wallenstein conducting the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra – taped at Republic Studios, Stage 9, Hollywood on 19-20 May 1960. 

This leonine, richly expressive account captured every artist involved at the very peak of his powers, and has been equaled, but not surpassed, only by the more febrile Heifetz / Feuermann / Ormandy set down (also by RCA Victor, and also at the Academy of Music with the Philadelphia Orchestra) only 12 years before, 21 December 1939, and the same company’s 29 June 1951 taping of Nathan Milstein, Gregor Piatigorsky, Fritz Reiner and the Robin Hood Dell Orchestra of Philadelphia (LM-1191). 

Soria issues were among the most lavish ever offered by any company, typically consisting of heavy canvas/cardboard outer sleeves, handsome booklets, and superb LP pressings.  In this case, the full-size 10-page booklet includes extensive notes by musicologist Karl Geiringer, eproductions from the autograph score, pictures of the artists who premiered Brahms’s late masterpiece (Joseph Joachim and Robert Hausman) as well as drawings of the original venues, and finally session photographs of Heifetz and Piatigorsky – in short, a feast of musical and discographic information, beautifully presented.  The sound is among RCA’s best.

This particular issue – with the box and booklet – will weigh over 600 g. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $22 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $25 USD.

Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else.

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears as new – overall, an outstanding collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
