Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome LP – a superb collector’s copy – from RCA (LSC-2563, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressing, red/silver label – ED1, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features works for string trio as played by three of the absolute finest violinists, violists, and cellists of the last century – Jascha Heifetz, William Primrose, and Gregor Piatigorsky.

These remarkable performances were warmly recorded at RCA Studio No. 2, Hollywood, CA, in August 1960 and are imbued with an extraordinary frisson arguably remaining – depending on one’s vantage point – unsurpassed on record. This is among the great chamber music albums issued during the 'Golden Age of Stereo'.

Of an RCA CD re-issue of these performances, the eminent critic Joan Chissell wrote in her review fo the April 1989 issue of The Gramophone:

“...Boldly arresting... Individually it is Piatigorsky's sumptuous cello that gives me the greatest joy... The last [of the Sinfonias] really does emerge like a spirited episode from one of the Brandenburgs...”

The complete contents are as follows:

Bach:

Sinfonia No. 3 in D Major BWV 789

Sinfonia No. 4 in D minor BWV 790

Sinfonia No. 9 in F minor BWV 795

(arr. by Heifetz, Piatigorsky, and Primrose from Bach’s Three-Part Inventions for Keyboard BWV 787-BWV 801)

Beethoven:

String Trio No. 4 in D Major Op. 9 No. 2

Schubert:

            String Trio No. 2 in B-flat Major D. 581

There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in English (by Albert Goldberg), as well as in German and French (by Dr. Gerhard Wienke). The striking cover art on the jacket front was designed by R.R.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is edgewear, more so at corners, as well as slight creasing, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though the surfaces are not absolutely silent – there are a few instances of minor surface noise – really this is a fine copy and the playback is superb. Only those requiring completely silent surfaces need hesitate. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
