Description
Helen Shapiro – Cry My Heart Out – 10” Acetate (test pressing?) with three tracks on other side, including Frank Ifield, c1962.
This is a strange 10” record that I think dates from late 1962. It is a double-sided Acetate disc (metal covered in whatever plastic such records are covered in) and the only information is on what I guess is the first side where someone has written in yellow chinograph pencil "Helen Shapiro – Cry My Heart Out". Sure enough, the record plays this song which was the b-side of Helen’s late 1962 single Keep Away from the Other Guy (Columbia DB 4908). Although the record is 10 inches in diameter, this track actually takes up just 7 inches, the same as the regular 7” single would. It plays at 45 rpm.Unusually (I think) the other side contains three tracks. The first is Queen For Tonight – which was the a-side of Helen’s next single (Columbia DB 4966). The last of the three tracks seems to be called I believe in love. If it is not called that then I can tell you that the first line is “I don’t believe that everything I read is true”. The middle track caught me out for a while as I expected it to be another track by Helen Shapiro. But, it is definitely a man, and after a bit of googling with song lyrics I found out that the song is called I’ve Got That Sad And Lonely Feeling, which was released by Frank Ifield at around this time (early 1963) on his EP Just One More Chance. I don’t have access to that track, but listening to the record I am happy to believe that this is indeed Frank Ifield.
The first side grades as NEX. The second side has some marks and scuffs but I have played it all through a couple of times and it there is nothing major to report. It certainly doesn't jump or stick and grades around VG. It all sounds OK and I guess this will make an interesting addition to Helen Shapiro or Frank Ifield collections and must be quite a curiosity to have both artists on the one record?!
