Description
Released in 1958 on Jubilee Records (JLP 1094), Stax Of Sax is one of alto saxophonist Herb Geller's finest and most overlooked recordings. Recorded in Los Angeles, the album captures Geller at the height of his creative powers, blending the cool precision of West Coast jazz with the harmonic sophistication and driving improvisation of bebop. It would also be one of his last American recordings before relocating to Europe following the death of his wife, pianist Lorraine Geller.
Backed by an exceptional quintet featuring Victor Feldman (vibraphone), Walter Norris (piano), Leroy Vinnegar(bass), and Anthony Vazley (drums), Geller delivers an elegant yet energetic performance. The combination of alto saxophone and vibraphone gives the album a distinctive, shimmering sound, while the rhythm section provides a relaxed but swinging foundation.
