Former Miles Davis sideman Herbie Hancock began his long and illustrious solo career with Takin 'Off, which was released on Blue Note in 1962. With Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Dexter Gordon on tenor sax, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, Takin 'Off showed Herbies skills as both a leading pianist and composer.
The standout piece is undoubtedly "Watermelon Man", a hard bop workout that was to become a jazz standard, thanks in part to a cover version by Mongo Santamaria. In 1973 Herbie returned to the song and released a jazz-funk version. Overall, Takin 'Off is an extraordinary debut album that only hinted at the future creativity of one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.
This Blue Note 80 vinyl edition is completely analog, was mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed onto 180 gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany.
