Description
This item is a 10" x 78rpm record by Billie Holiday and her Orchestra. Titles are "Strange Fruit" and "Fine and Mellow." The visual grade is V- on the VJM scale, with some gloss, moderate groove wear and light scuffs and scratches. The record has a small edge chip, as shown in the second scan, which requires careful cueing but does not affect the music. Aurally, "Strange Fruit" plays with noticeable surface noise and swishing which is somewhat annoying during the piano interlude but tolerable during Holiday's vocals; it helps to use a lower "treble" or "loudness" setting on your amp. "Fine and Mellow" has less noise and grades closer to V. Both sides play through with no skips or repeats and minimal distortion, altho there's a light click during the orchestral intro on the A side.
To some collectors this copy is a placeholder, but IMO it's quite adequate for research and/or display and the sound and condition are acceptable for persons unwilling to spend several hundred dollars for an E copy. And it's definately an historical artifact from a time and place which should never have been tolerated.
