Description
redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and rare LP from BASF / MPS (21 22397-3, German pressing, red label, stereo) features legendary Ludwig Hoelscher cellist in a masterly pairing of Grieg's Cello Sonata in A minor Op. 36 with Josef Rheinberger's Cello Sonata in C Major Op. 92, accompanied throughout by his longtme recital partner, the pianist Kurt Rapf.
Both works, particularly the Rheinberger, are seldom heard either in the concert hall or on record and Ludwig's accounts rank as landmarks in these work's respective discographies.
Recorded at the MPS Studios in Villingen in April 1974, the superb recording well captures Ludwig's richly sonorous tone, with a perfect balance between him and the brilliant Kurt Rapf.
The movement timings are as follows:
Grieg: Cello Sonata in A minor Op. 36
I Allegro agitato (8:29)
II Andnate molto tranquillo (5:19)
III Allegro (12:10)
Rheinberger: Cello Sonata in C Major Op. 92
I Non troppo allegro (9:31)
II Canzonetta; Andante (4:54)
III Finale: Vivo (5:55)
Any Hoelscher release is cause for celebration and there are few finer 'portraits of the artist' and this handsome BASF/ MPS release, particularly when the recording is so fine.
The reverse side of the jacket carries insightful liner notes by Gottfried Kraus – provided in German, English, and French.
This album was produced and engineered by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, and supervised by Hanna Dieter.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There are MPS stickers to both sides and very minor corner wear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
