Description
redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP from BASF/MPS (37 93112, Spanish pressing, orange label, stereo) features legendary cellist Ludwig Hoelscher in 8 short works for cello and piano, brought off with enormous conviction and charisma by this remarkable artist. He is accompanied throughout by veteran pianist Kurt Rapf and the sound is warm and superbly balanced.
Hoelscher’s exact program is as follows:
Robert Schumann: Adagio & Allegro for Cello and Piano Op. in A-flat Major Op. 70
Gabriel Fauré: Apr
ès un rêve
Luigi Boccherini: Rondo in C Major
Max Bruch: Kol Nidrei Op. 47
Antonin Dvorak: Adagio in D-flat Major (Waldesruhe) Op. 68 No. 5
Antonin Dvorak: Rondo in G Major Op. 94
Maurice Ravel: Pièce en forme de Habanera
Frederic Chopin: Polonaise brillante in C Major Op. 3
Hoelscher plays with marvelous purity and songfulness. Indeed, there is a remarkably vocal quality to Hoelscher's playing that resonates long in the memory after the music has stopped. Rapf provides perfectly graded accompaniment.
Ludwig Hoelscher is an artist whose entire output deserves systematic re-release on compact disc and certainly this magical recital can withstand the most exalted comparison, be it with Casals, Fournier, or Rostropovich.
This album was recorded in the warm acoustics of MPS Studios, Villingen, in April 1974 (producer: Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer / engineer: Hanna Dieter). The memorable cover photo of Hoelscher was taken by Fred Hugel and there are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Werner F. Kreim – provided in German, French, and Spanish.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor corner wear and mild discoloration to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and plays without defect – a superb collector's copy.
