This beautiful LP – a superb collector's copy – from Capitol (P 8472, US pressing, rainbow label, mono) features the great Hollywood Quartet's magnificent accounts of Villa-Lobos' String Quartet No. 6 in E Major W. 399 and Kodaly's String Quartet No. 2 Op. 10.

At this time, the HSQ was comprised of Felix Slatkin (violin), Paul C. Shure (violin), Alvin Dinkin (viola), and Eleanor Slatkin (cello).

The exact discographic details are as follows:

Villa-Lobos: String Quartet No. 6

> rec. 17 October 1949 (producer: Jim Conkling / engineer: John Palladino)

-------------------------------------

Wrote the eminent Lionel Salter in his his June 1951 review for The Gramophone:

"...the playing is really brilliant, and the recording on this side very satisfactory...I heartily recommend it to those with a taste for the unfamiliar repertoire...there are many delightful things in this score—the 7/8 cello cantabile against pizzicato figures which starts the second movement, or the deliciously fresh...finale, but to my mind the loveliest part is the Andante, which opens with sentimental chromatic chords sliding down under an ostinato figure in harmonies—a fascinating sound. We should welcome this attractive work—as yet unperformed here—into the repertoire."

-------------------------------------

Kodaly: String Quartet No. 2 Op. 10

> rec. 15 June & 9 July 1958 (producer: Richard E. Myers / engineer: Sherwood Hall III)

Wrote veteran critic Robert Layton in his his May 1996 review for The Gramophone:

"If you remain unconvinced that this quartet (note: by Kodaly) is a piece of stature, listen to the Hollywood Quartet. In terms of sheer conviction, I am not so sure that their performance isn't the best ever."

-------------------------------------

There are extensive liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The lovely cover photo is similarly uncredited.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Aside from very mild shelfwear to the rear panel, the album appears virtually as new – indeed, it would be quite difficult to improve upon this copy – overall, a lovely collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
