... here is my 10 Point grading system...
(10) / MINT / Perfect and nothing but perfect. A grade I will rarely if ever use since even most new records are not truly perfect. Be skeptical of anybody's list that is abundant with this grade.
(9) / MINT- / Virtually perfect with one or two insignificant marks. Most new records fall into this catagory. Gem quality.
(8) / NEAR MINT / Still a nearly new record. No significant signs of wear. Probably only played a handful of times. In some cases never played but shows some signs of handling. Retains 95 to 100% of its original gloss.
(7) / VG++ / Played and handled sparingly. A well cared for record that retains 80 to 95% of its original gloss. Unless noted, labels should be free of any defects. In most cases, record should play like new.
(6) / VG+ / Showing more signs of use but still well cared for. Retains 50 to 80% of its original gloss. May have either light scuffs or track wear, or a combination of the two. Labels are still generally clean, any defects of which will be noted. Sound quality of this grade is still excellent.
(5) / VG to VG+ / The reason for this grade is because so many used records fall here at the half way point. By understanding my (6) and (4) grades, you should be able to pinpoint what this grade stands for.
(4) / VG / Probably the most misunderstood and often most misrepresented of all grades. Many dealers treat this grade as junk which defies the meaning of "Very Good". My VG's are still desireable records. Gloss is still present along with more scuffs and light scratches. In general, no excessive wear on labels but any will be noted. Still plays relatively clean. Some light noise may be present on softer recorded material but its presence will be even and not distracting from the overall recorded sound.
(3) / VG- / Numerous scuffs and scratches, may have some or no gloss left. Label wear present on most but some survive better than the vinyl on which they reside. Some will play surprisingly clean while others may suffer from either pops or distortion. Suffices as a good filler until a better copy comes along.
(2) / GOOD / Typical garage or flea market variety and probably hasn't seen a sleeve for most of its life. Much wear present throughout. Although noisy, record will play through with no skips.
(1) / FAIR to POOR / Unless a truly rare piece comes along, you probably won't see anything offered from me in this condition. Unless rare, good only for skeet shooting. Roasted!
