Description
Original deep-groove, flat-rim pressing of Howard McGhee "The Connection" on the orange labels of Felsted FL7512. This is the rare American pressing, not the more commonly seen British issue. (Due to the rarity of this recording, a little more detail than usual will go into its description.) The playing surface appears to be in near-new condition - bright and clean - with a high luster. The first track, "Theme for Sister Salvation" has a few (I didn't count them, but it is certainly fewer than 6) light, non-repetitive and non-distracting tics. Otherwise, the record plays as new. Judging from the spindle hole, it is doubtful that the record was played more than two or three times, at most. The cover shows rubbing to the front slick, particularly on the black arrow. The back is clean, with only slight signs of rubbing. There is a 1/2" split on the top seam, at the opening, and 1/2" wear - but no split - on the bottom seam, at the opening. Musically, it is interesting to note that this music was first recorded in June, l960, only four months after the Blue Note release under Freddie Redd's leadership, with Jackie McLean on the front line. The music was terrific but if it had any drawback, it was its lilting programmatic quality, carried over from the theatrical stage into the recording studio. The Howard McGhee session, however, seems to strip the theatrical element from the music, to the benefit of the compositions. This is straight-ahead jazz, with no theatrical overlay. The front line of Howard McGhee and Tina Brooks is astounding. Inasmuch as Freddie was under contract with Blue Note, he is listed in the Felsted personnel as "I. Ching - Piano".
