Description

Essential postwar blues album: Howlin' Wolf, "Moanin' in the Moonlight." Chess LP 1434, black label first pressing.  Overall, this copy is in pretty good shape. The front and back slicks are intact and complete, altho the front slick has a 3" crease at the lower right corner; there are two vertical lines at top center (visible in the scan if you look closely) where the slick has crimped slightly, and several similar small "crease crimps" near the bottom; and the previous owner wrote his name on the moon.  Both the front and back slicks have light, scattered, age spots.  The spine is intact but worn, and the cover is completely split at the top and bottom.  Whoever gets this will need to tape the top and bottom seams, or keep it in a poly outer sleeve.  There's no inner sleeve.  Grade: VG- to G+.

Happy to report, the disc itself is in much better shape.  Altho spindle-marks on the label indicate frequent play, the previous owner must have had a high-quality turntable and cartridge because the disc shows only light groove wear and retains at least half its original gloss.  There are a couple dozen short and thin hair scratches on both sides but only a few are audible -- barely audible, given all the wonderful noise made by Wolf and his band.  The record plays strong with negligible surface noise and no distorts (other than what was in the original masters of the earliest performances.)  Grade: solid VG.
