Brief Info: Along with MC5, The Stooges are now considered one of the most pioneering American proto-punk garage bands of all-time, but commercial success failed to happen. The Stooges issued two albums prior to this, their last. One in 1969 and then 1970 – both the self-titled debut and ‘Fun House’ went largely ignored, especially in the UK, they are beyond difficult to find as originals. Proving commercial failures and some band members heavily into drugs, their performances becoming ever-more erratic and unpredictable, they split in 1971. Fronted by Iggy Pop, then a largely unknown vocalist, his stage presence and full-on performances are legendary. Sometimes outrageous, wild and uncompromising, his stage antics went beyond theatre. His career was somewhat saved by David Bowie who admired his work with The Stooges and they became good friends. Pop, like Bowie was given a contract with Mainman and produced this groundbreaking and influential album, now under the name Iggy and The Stooges, which Bowie helped mix. Again, it went largely ignored and any reunion of the band was short-lived. Over time, critics and public opinion on The Stooges has been considerably more positive. Many regard their albums as classics and inspirational for the development of alternative and punk rock. Originals are rare and seldom seen, many that do surface usually in very poor or trashed conditions. This record is very impressive and plays accordingly. The cover in fine condition, the rare inner sleeve had one side torn and I have repaired it best as I could – now generally neat and certainly intact. Until Iggy Pop had some success as a solo artist, these early Stooges albums were hardly known and virtually ‘lost’ protopunk classics, when interest gained momentum in them, few could even find them as originals. Iggy, now nicknamed the ‘Godfather of Punk’, began his long career here, and this a rare opportunity to own arguably the best of the three Stooges albums.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood, includes the graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Very prone to wear for obvious reasons, this front has fared generally well. Quite light rim dulling, and some lightish rubbing near the bottom edge. It retains strong unfaded colour, and most of any creasing are fine edge types. There are sticker issues which this cover is known to be intolerant. The striking image of Iggy is superb, the lack of any band name or title on the front being unusual for any album. Even with this superb picture of the singer, the album went largely unnoticed.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, the lack of ugly penetrating ring wear is a plus for sure.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight with only light patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Moderate rubbing on this storage edge, possibly with some subtle colouring in here-and-there from the past, certainly not much in that respect and not too obvious. But I will always mention anything I notice.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. One small enhancement is seen on the back fold. The text largely present and strong with just some rubbing to the word ‘RAW’, the rest all intact as seen.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with very fine shape retained with no knocks or significant dinks.

Cover Summary: A cover as uncompromising as the band, this will rarely be found in much better condition, finding it at all as a genuine UK original is a challenge in its own right. Just enough, mostly on the edges and corners to remind of age, with a few subtle enhancements in those areas. Not for purists, but this has far more positives than negatives, and many fans and collectors wanting this classic cover will be happy.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: and not easy grading an inner sleeve that has a significant repair to one side, this is a subjective grading and open to opinion. Basically, I think this looks very good, and arguably better, and I have graded it as such. But now back intact, this still looks impressive, but clearly not for the highly discerning, that is more than fair to state. A rare inner sleeve that was not made available on later repressings, this is not seen at all often. At some time, an owner put cellotape on the two side edges, this has since dried up and fallen off, the non-flipback side had a tear all the way down, I decided to repair this as best I could, and made a pretty decent job of it (I think). Some old tape residue is still present, but not on the main areas of interest. The bottom edge is naturally fully intact (against the odds). Iggy is seen in close-up – pictures are the same both sides – in black and white from the same graphic as the main cover. The back side of the inner has text and Great Britain manufacturing credits as well as two external flipbacks. Paper is very thin indeed and is unlined, so edge damage is hugely difficult to avoid. What has been avoided is creasing, this is neat and still impressive to view. But it has issues as stated, but better that than no inner at all – this is rare and collectable in its own right.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT:a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest usage on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light and wispy as seen under my bright grading lamp. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything really shows, both labels are superb as seen. This record is just so hard to find, let alone in much better condition. Rarely, if ever bought by hi-fi purists or connoisseurs, but a more younger audience who were prepared to try the more ‘out-there’ new acts of the time. Visually a splendid original record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This ‘lost’ classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. Production was probably deliberately quite raw and unpolished, but that’s the way ‘punk’ music was supposed to be. Any over-production of this set would have destroyed its powerful impact. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Mostly loud and uncompromising rock, few copies will outperform this original A1/B1 UK first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally carefully handled. The wispy surface traces probably from dry-cloth ‘cleaning’ and totally harmless. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – my first copy for years – a rare opportunity.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
