Description

THE "COMPAGNIA COLUMBIA" give their all to this two-part sketch, "IL GENERALE NOBILE AL POLO NORD" (General Nobile at the North Pole). It's an exuberant re-enactment of the events of May and June of 1928, when General Umberto Nobile (1885 - 1978!) and his intrepid crew flew the airship "ITALIA" to the North Pole, crashed in a storm on the return trip, and were rescued by an international team, by rail, ship and air!

Part 1:  "LA GLORIOSA PARTENZA" (The Glorious Departure): Generale Nobile and the "ITALIA" take off, to lusty cheers and a brass band!

Part 2:  "IL DISASTRO" (The Disaster!): Amid frigid, gale-force winds, the "ITALIA" crashes noisily in a polar wasteland!

These famous events were chronicled in books and movies, but never with more sheer Italian Gusto than on this record, which was made when the events were still hot on the griddle - no later than July. The Columbia sound-effects department had a field day with this one.

Umberto Nobile's fascinating 93-year life as an airship designer, explorer, world traveler and bon-vivant is covered in his Wikipedia article, as is the story of his doomed airship, "ITALIA," in an article of its own.

This original 1928 green-label "Italian Series" Columbia 14378-F is in fine overall E- condition.

*****

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing!  My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value.  I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all.  If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!  Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.”  I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
