In the Court of the Crimson King (an observation by King Crimson) is the 1969 debut album, by the British group KING CRIMSON The album reached #3 on the British charts. The album is certified Gold in the USA.

The album is generally viewed as one of the strongest of the Progressive Rock Groups genre, where King Crimson largely stripped away the blues-based foundations of rock music and mixed together with jazz, and European symphonic elements. In his 1997 book Rocking the Classics, critic and musicologist Edward Macan notes that In the Court of the Crimson King "may be the most influential progressive rock album ever released". The Who's Pete Townsend was quoted as calling the album "an uncanny masterpiece".In  the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came 4th in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums".

Barry Godber (1946–1970), an artist and computer programmer painted the album cover. Godber died in February 1970 of a Heart attack, shortly after the album's release. It would be his only painting, and is now owned by Robert Fripp. Fripp had this to say about Godber:

"Peter brought this painting in and the band loved it. I recently recovered the original from EG's offices because they kept it exposed to bright light, at the risk of ruining it, so I ended up removing it. The face on the outside is the Schizoid Man, and on the inside it's the Crimson King. If you cover the smiling face, the eyes reveal an incredible sadness. What can one add? It reflects the music."

On October 10, 1969 the album 'In the Court of the Crimson King: An Observation by King Crimson' was released. Peter Townshend of The Who called it "an uncanny masterpiece". Rolling Stone thought it "pretentious" and Melody Maker said "It gives little idea of their true power on stage but still packs tremendous impact". The album's opening track, '21st Century Schizoid Man', burst through hi-fi stereo speakers with an avalanche of sound. Songs like 'Epitaph' and the album's title track employed heavy use of a keyboard instrument called the mellotron, which used pre-recorded tape loops of strings and woodwinds to create an orchestral effect.

At this point in their history, the band consisted of Robert Fripp (guitar), Michael Giles (drums), Greg Lake (bass, vocals) and Ian McDonald (keyboards, sax and flute). Lyricist Peter Sinfield also served as a roadie and light and sound manager in the band's early days playing in clubs around London. On July 5th of that year the group's 'big break' came opening for the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park, playing for more than 600,000 people. By the time of the first album's release, a small but devoted cult of fans had already come into being.

Crimson toured America for the first time in November and December of 1969, playing alongside many popular bands of the period and distinguishing themselves with doom-laden song lyrics and tight instrumentation. Added to this was the interesting sight of Fripp, the lead guitarist, who had made the decision after the first eight performances to play on stage seated on a stool.

CONDITION OF THE ALBUM;

COVER ;The 1st Press Gate-Fold Cover was made in the UK by E.J.Day Co Ltd. These Covers don't seem to stand the test of time very well, due to the Matt Colours being untreated, But Not This ONE "Amazing", Only slight colour loss on the top & bottom Edges of this Rare Cover, the colours on the Front and Back are still in lovely Vibrant condition, As is the inside of this Fantastic Cover. Most of the colour loss is to the spine, which is still very strong and mostly legible. There are No Tears or Creases whatsoever, still a Great & Rare cover. Looks like it has had some colouring in by the previous owner, only on the edges and some spine, but this does not detract from the beauty of this Cover. Easily Ex.

VINYL ; This Record being a"First Pressing"is Pressed on a Thick Slab Of Quality Vinyl, and has only been played a  Handfull of times very carefully, Still having it's full Shine. It Looks great, having only one hairline sleeve mark & two tiny Non-Audible Marks on the last track of Side 2. Apart from them it Sounds and Looks like It had been Pressed Yesterday, and sounds even Better, Amazing Sound Response on All Frequencies, just Incredible. When tilted to a Bright light, I couldn't see any Audio Marks, or Blemishes that definately have NO effect on the Superb Audio that is produced by this Vinyl, Easily the Best Sounding Original Copy that i have come across and Heard, so to get one in this condition is practically impossible. Not even a Click or a Pop, and certainly No Static on the Whole Album, Especially on Moonchild (Very RARE) Amazing to hear an Album sound So Good that's 41 Yrs Old. I'd Grade It as a NrMint.

INNER SLEEVE ; This is the Original Anti-Static Polylined inner Sleeve, having Pat No's & Bags Can Be Dangerous To Children, Printed in Blue. No Tears, splits or writting. An Easy Nr Mint.

LABELS ; The RARE Pink Island Labels are both in Excellent condition, showing how little this Album has been played. No Marks or Tears. Just letter p written in the I on Side 2. Also in NrMint Condition.
