THE BEATLES 1964 LP-

INTRODUCING... THE BEATLES

VEE JAY RECORDS # VJLP 1062

>>>"VERSION 2 AUTHENTIC PRESSING" <<<

>>> MONO! <<<

RARE RECORD ALERT!!!

Well, folks, here it is. The very First U.S. Beatles album...sort of! This record is an example of a moment in musical history that many people don't even realized happened. Vee Jay Records thought they were getting a monster group because of the Fab Four's U.K. reputation, but decided to drop them after the recording of this album. The first initial pressing was not large and very final. But then, the group was signed by Capitol Records and quickly became a supergroup.

O.K., here is where the history gets funky. This is what I have been told: The album was released in 1964, on or around January 10, 1964. By January 16, Capitol Records sued VJ Records. In February, VJ resumed production and "Love Me Do" & "P.S. I Love You" were replaced by "Please Please Me" & "Ask Me Why". Pressings with the changes are known as Version Two; those without the changes, Version One. No matter what version you have, it is the Authenticity of the pressing that makes it valuable. Counterfeits are not worth much. Mine is Authentic as far as I can tell!

Now, there were a limited amount of Mono copies pressed by Vee Jay Records in 1964-these are the AUTHENTIC pressings, with an all black label, the left justified titles and the matte black and silver print/finish. The printing of "THE BEATLES" is above the spindle hole. The cover has George's shadow on the wall, the colors are crisp and not faded. Even though it is worn, the back cover has sharp printing of the titles. "HONEY" in "A Taste Of Honey" has no "chunks" missing out of it and the front wrap-around is UNDER the back cover slick, not on top of it.

In the late 1960's, these AUTHENTIC pressings became very rare and illegal bootleg copies began appearing. There were dozens of different versions of these cheap copies, all claiming to be the real 1964 pressing. They were printed up to the 1980's even! The following is from the book "INTRODUCING... THE BEATLES, A DISCOGRAPHY AND PRICE GUIDE TO VJLP-1062" by Perry Cox:

"While it is very helpful to have a known original on hand for comparison, few folks have that luxury. When this is not possible, use the following checklist to make a determination regarding authenticity."

Some of the more common characteristics found on COUNTERFEIT COVERS:

  • Covers with a brown border around the front cover photo are fakes.
  • Covers with a bright yellow tint and the word "STEREO" printed in black at the upper left are fakes.
  • Covers without George Harrison's shadow-visible to his right of where he stands, near the edge are fakes.
  • Covers with red, blue, and yellow dots, unmistakable under the top of the back cover, are fakes. The dots are used by the printers during the printing process. On originals, the dots are in a different area and are not normally visible. (This fake is of particular importance due to the high quality of the front cover photo. For that reason, this cover has fooled many a collector. Look for the dots! Fake covers are almost always accompanied by a fake disc.)
  • Covers for the stereo issue that list Love Me Do and P. S. I Love You, among the two columns of tracks on the back, are almost always fakes. Only a couple of authentic copies of these versions are known to exist.
  • If either the front or the back cover is flat (lacking gloss) it's is a counterfeit.

Some of the more common characteristics found on COUNTERFEIT DISCS:

  • Any labels with flat textured rainbow/colorband labels are fakes.
  • Labels that have "THE BEATLES" and "INTRODUCING The BEATLES" separated by the center hole are fakes.
  • If the width of the vinyl trail-off -the gap between the end of the last track and the edge of the label is greater than one inch, you have a fake.
  • Any copy with black labels that do not have the rainbow colorband, that are printed on glossy paper stock, are fakes.
  • Copies with rainbow/colorband labels that have faint print and/or weak color brightness and a lack of clarity are fakes.

Some of the more common characteristics found on ORIGINAL COVERS:

  • Covers-front and back-must have slicks that are either glossy or semi-glossy.
  • Printing on covers must be of high quality and professional looking.
  • Back cover lists contents in two columns
  • Stereo copies must meet one of the following conditions: 1. Back cover pictures 25 color photos of other Vee-Jay albums. This copy is commonly known as the "Ad Back" cover. 2. Back cover is totally blank; a completely white slick with no print whatsoever. 3. Back cover lists content in two columns, almost always containing Please Please Me and Ask Me Why. Only a couple of original copies have been verified listing Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You.

Some of the more common characteristics found on ORIGINAL DISCS:

  • Labels have "THE BEATLES" and the title "INTRODUCING THE BEATLES" above the center hole.
  • Only gloss or semi-gloss rainbow/colorband labels are used on originals.
  • All original labels have bright, sharp silver print.
  • The vinyl trail-off -the gap between the end of the last track and the edge of the label usually measures from 7/8" to 1" wide, but never greater.
  • The rainbow/colorband that circles the perimeter of an original label is of high resolution, with smooth, gradual changes in color.
  • The vinyl trail-off area on over 90% of all originals has one or more of the following mechanical Stampings: 1. The term "AudioMatrix." 2. The letters "MR" inside of a circle. 3. The letters "APP" in italics. Among originals, only those made in Santa Monica lack machine Stampings. Regardless, these still have the aforementioned bright silver print and glossy labels. To date, we have never seen a counterfeit copy with machine stamping in the trail-off area.
  • We have never found a counterfeit with the word "STEREO" printed on the label.
  • Any copy with "STEREO" printed on the label is more than likely an original.
  • All originals with black labels that do not have the rainbow colorband are printed on a flat-not glossy-paper stock.

Original Inner Sleeves
The color inner sleeves have one of the following headers on either side:

"THE GREAT GOSPEL ARTISTS ARE ON VJ"

"OTHER FINE ALBUMS OF SIGNIFICANT INTEREST"

Vee-Jay used three different inner protective disc sleeves:

Plain white sleeve This is the most common sleeve used on Introducing The Beatles. White background sleeve White background with 25 color photos of other albums on the Vee-Jay record label on each side of the sleeve. Issued with some original copies of Introducing The Beatles. One side of the sleeve used the same 25 mini photos as the "Ad-Back" LP. Red background sleeve Red background with 25 color photos of other albums on the Vee-Jay record label on each side of the sleeve. This style was NOT used with any copies of Introducing The Beatles lps as they were printed and shipped after VeeJay discontinued pressing this lp. This sleeve was shipped on Oct. 22, 1964.

 Here are the songs:

I SAW HER STANDING THERE - MISERY

ANNA - CHAINS - BOYS - ASK ME WHY

PLEASE, PLEASE ME - BABY IT'S YOU

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET?

A TASTE OF HONEY - THERE'S A PLACE

TWIST AND SHOUT

Are you still with me? First, the cover. It is the "Column Back", with "Please, Please Me" having it's comma and the bottom right corner on the back has the number "2". There is some gloss on the front, George's shadow is in the wall, the colors are crisp and sharp. There are NO red, yellow and blue dots on the back. The front wraparound slick is UNDER the back cover slick. Now, the labels. Flat black with sharp silver labels. "The Beatles" is ABOVE the spindle hole. The runout gap is NOT over 1 inch. All of this is indications of my copy's authenticity. In the deadwax runout, the matrix numbers are both -1 and underneath is the Master date of 2-6-64. There is a stamper but I can't read it. Also, the initials "URJ" is there on the deadwax.

I have graded the cover VG++ and of course there is no bar code. This one looks really good, with some water stains along 1 edges. I'm shipping it in a vinyl cover protector sleeve. The vinyl is VG+ and it played really good! The long scuffs on Side 1 cannot be heard. It's on that HEAVY 1960's vinyl, toiugh and warp-resistant! Remember, I use my own grading system, NOT Goldmine's. Also included is the VERY RARE VJ records sleeve! As I write this there is only ONE OTHER of this albuum that has the sleeve! I could have a large starting price on this, I could have a reserve price, but I don't. My customers deserve better than that, and so do YOU! So if you have ever wanted a copy of this album, this may be the one for you. You won't be paying the usual $500 price tag, that's for sure! Good Luck!

This LP Record Set was cleaned using the

VPI HW-16.5 VACUUM TUBE CLEANER!

The HW-16.5 is the standard in record cleaning machines, neither its build quality nor its cleaning power has ever been surpassed! Its high-torque, 18 RPM turntable motor is capable of standing the pressure of heavy scrubbing during long cleaning sessions, and its 35-second cleaning cycle makes quick work out of even the dirtiest records! The improved 16.5 model has the new self-aligning vacuum suction tube for even more accurate cleaning! I now clean all of my records that are NOT Factory Sealed with the VPI, then test listen to the vinyl, then clean the record again with the VPI. This baby costs me hundreds of dollars, but My Customers Deserve THE BEST!!!

GRADING SCALE

I use a Universal Grading System to describe the quality of the LP albums and 45 singles that I sell. I grade records under strong, diffused room light or discreet sunlight. I do not use stock photos for my ads; all of my scans are of the Item You See! You get no surprises from me!

NOTE: Please keep in mind that when I describe any LP, I am referring to its Original Year Of Release, NOT the year that the LP was printed! In many cases, the year that a given LP was printed is unknown. When in doubt, PLEASE ASK me! Thank You!

All of my LP’s are stored upright in a SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT!

  • SS Mint (M): Album is New, Still Sealed and has never been played.
  • Mint (M): The vinyl has no noticeable scratches, fingerprints or defects and looks like it has never been played, although there may be use at the spindle hole. The cover has no noticeable wear or defects. There may be very slight curling of the right side corners of the cover due to shrink wrap pressure. May still have it’s original shrink wrap. MINT does not mean "perfect".
  • Near Mint (NM): Almost Mint vinyl with perhaps a few visual imperfections that should not affect the sound of the record. Perhaps a small amount of static can be heard on a few areas. Cover is nice looking with little or no ring wear and may still have its original shrink wrap.
  • VG++: Vinyl has some signs of wear; very clean, only light surface marks, scuffs or scratches which will not distract significantly from the sound, some audible static, some snaps or pops but no stalls or skips unless listed. Cover may have some signs of wear, perhaps some ringwear but is still in nice collectible condition, solid with no cuts, holes or splits unless listed, may have edge repairs.
  • VG+: Played often with moderate surface wear, marks, scuffs or scratches, and some moderate noise, static, pops or skips - still plays well with increased areas of pops and static. Cover may have significant overall wear and ring wear, repaired edges or spine, may have cuts/holes/cut corners.
  • VG: Overall wear, more noisy sound during quiet passages, a lot of static and many skips that require lifting the needle. Cover is well worn, usually with considerable ring wear. may have cuts, holes, cut corners. May have taped edges. The lowest grade.

In my opinion, the grade of “Mint” and the word “Mint” does not equal Perfection. The grade of Perfection does not exist, as far as I know. Different phono cartridges and stereo setups, condition of the needle and if the record is cleaned before playing (or not cleaned) affects the way a vinyl record sounds. You can look at a record with the naked eye and not see micro imperfections which might affect the music and the sound. There are just too many variables. I listen to records after cleaning them. If I do not hear skips or pops or snaps and I do not see noticeable scratches, then as far as I am concerned, that record is Mint. Be very careful not to compare my grading standards with those of others. I do not use Goldmine and to compare my grades to Goldmine is not really fair. Remember, it's always best to ask questions BEFORE bidding!
