THE BLANK BACK
The second variation of the album's back cover is also shrouded in mystery and speculation. It is similar to the Ad Back in that it contains no information regarding the group or the songs. But while the Ad Back is one of the most colorful back covers in the Beatles catalog, the second variation is at the other end of the spectrums glossy blank white slick. This variation is known among collectors as the "Blank Back" cover. The mono and stereo Blank Back covers each have two noticeable but minor variations. One is a mono cover with "Printed in U.S.A." on its front cover slick, the other constructed with a later front cover slick without "Printed in U.S.A." Similarly, the stereo cover has the same variations with "Printed in U.S.A." on its front cover slick and another which does not.
Some Beatles collectors and historians believe that these Blank Back covers may be the result of a production error; however, the existence of four different variations of this cover makes the factory error theory seem unlikely. Others have speculated that these covers were prototype covers. Some individuals have even argued that the Blank Back covers were used by Vee-Jay as promotional copies of the album. This theory makes little sense as the Blank Back cover promotes nothing and DJs require a track list. At least the Ad Back cover promoted other fine albums of significant interest on Vee-Jay. In all likelihood, the Blank Backs were a limited transitional run substituted after all Ad Back slicks had been used but prior to receipt of the third back cover variation that listed the song titles. For fans of The Twilight Zone, submitted for your approval is the theory that someone at Vee-Jay had the ability to look into the future and prepared the cover as a prototype for the Beatles 1968 White Album.
