  • Label & Cat #: 1954 Ethnic Folkways Library – P 458
  • Vinyl Grade: Play graded *Of the 26 different recording bands on vinyl, 22 of them play Excellent/Near Mint. There are some sleeve storage scuffs/marks on 4 of the bands on Side 1 (# 4,5,6 & 7) which did slightly affect playback with some light and intermittent background noise including some ticks, but did not overpower the recording sound. These 4 tracks are graded as Very Good Plus.
  • Cover Grade: Excellent (EX) *textured cover with paste over on front is in near perfect condition with I.D. # taped on front and some very minor wear on top seam. Included is the 12-page Near Mint insert with recording notes and track information.
  • Notes: Recorded by Harry Tschopik Jr. "Indian Music of the Upper Amazon" specifically highlights the music of the Iawa and Bora Indians. It features the traditional music of tribes like the Cocama, Shipibo-Conibo, Campa (Asháninka), indigenous peoples of the Upper Amazon region. Traditional instruments often include various flutes (pan pipes and nose flutes), drums, rattles, and whistles, sometimes used to mimic animal and bird calls. The recordings capture music for different social and ritual occasions such as fiestas, social dances, public work, war songs, puberty rites, lullabies, and funeral music. Indigenous Amazonian music is deeply tied to the natural world and spiritual practices with Shamans using  sacred songs and Shamanic Chants known as ícaros in Peru, to induce visionary states or communicate with spirits. Language(s) heard are Asháninka, Instrumental and Shipibo-Conibo.

GRADING STANDARDS: (M) Mint: Record and cover appear absolutely perfect in every way.  Grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.
(NM) Near Mint: Vinyl is shiny with no obvious signs of wear and plays perfectly with no audible imperfections. Cover is close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident. 
(EX or VG++) Excellent /Very Good ++: Record or jacket has a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. Vinyl has been handled and played very carefully. Light paper scuffs and/or spindle marks may be visible with no appreciable lessening in sound quality. Covers show very minor signs of handling and wear. 
(VG+) Very Good Plus: Record displays light scuffs, spindle marks or very light scratches that may create some noise disturbances, but don't affect one's overall listening experience. Jacket begins to show more prominent signs of storage wear and aging.
(VG) Very Good: Defects are more pronounced with visible signs of handling and playing. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially during soft passages and a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Covers may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming. 
(G) Good / (G+)Good Plus: Vinyl will have scratches and visible groove wear. Record plays without skipping, although noticeable surface noise or ticks will be heard. Jackets have even more pronounced defects such as seam splits, tape, writing, ring wear, water damage or other defects.
