Description
I missed Calling all the Hero's getting in the charts and all that and I found them by watching Old Grey Whistle Test Review of the Year for 1986. My Mother In Law was waiting to wish me a happy new year but I had to keep her waiting because I had to know who this band were that were on now. I was in some trouble over that as they played the extended version of Calling all the Heroes, not with the Mother in Law who was cool but with the then Mrs who wasn't. The next day the shops were open I was into Ilford buying the album and I loved it. I caught them at the Town and Country Club and they were astonishingly good. So after Marillion these are the other band that for me saved the 1980's. Although through Francis Dunnery I have stayed much closer to them over the years. The following year Once around the World came out and it was even better. My pal Inky who I knew should love them but had not been impressed with the 1st album would not even listen to the 2nd album. I had to act fast I got us both tickets for the Astoria and tricked him into meeting me in the pub across the road. Fortunately he didn't refuse and we both saw one of the great gigs of our gig going lifetime. He still loves them to this day and does he owe me for that - no of course not because it was him and his brother that painstakingly weaned me off the Wombles and Stylistics and onto Jethro Tull, Genesis and The Who so I can never repay him for that.
