Ultra rare lp on a small Canadian label containing first recordings of beautiful early microtonal works by the obscure but pioneering Russian Futurism-associated Ivan Wyschnegradsky (this lp was the first ever to feature the composer). His exquisite pieces were realized using 2 conventional pianos tuned a quarter-tone apart, and they abound in gorgeous alien microtonal harmonies; they take up all of side 1. The experimental Hambraeus composition attempts to use 2 pianos to create a "soundscape of bells" and "provide that illusion of spatial reverberation which one observes when listening to bells from a tower." Mather's piece incorporates serialist methods. Mather and Pierrette LePage perform all works. Includes insert with English and French notes. All in all, a highly recommended experimental music rarity.
artist info from album notes etc.:
Wyschnegradsky was an innovative Russian-French microtonal composer who studied with Alexander Scriabin and Nicolas Sokolov, associated with the Russian futurists, and worked with Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, Yvonne Loriod, Yvette Grimaud, Bengt Hambraeus, and Claude Ballif. From 1918 on he composed almost exclusively using microtonal scales, and he collaborated with Alois Haba during the 1920s to construct the first quarter-tone piano; he would later spend several years in a sanatorium. His works and theories of microtonality would go on to influence composers like Harry Partch, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Easley Blackwood, Julian Carrillo, Glenn Branca, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, John Eaton, Henk Badings, James Tenney, Rhys Chatham, Tony Conrad, and Joe Maneri. • Hambraeus was a Swedish composer and organist influenced by Edgard Varese, Anton Webern, and John Cage; he attended the Darmstadt new music courses in the 50s, where he associated with Olivier Messiaen, Boulez, Luigi Nono, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and he worked at the Studio di Fonologia in Milan, one of the first electronic music studios, alongside John Cage, Henri Pousseur, Luigi Nono, Andre Boucourechliev, Luciano Berio, and Bruno Maderna. • Mather is a Canadian pianist and composer who studied under Darius Milhaud, Olivier Messiaen, and Lazare Levy.
