·       JACK KEROUAC – POETRY FOR THE BEAT GENERATION – INSANELY RARE UNRELEASED (WITHDRAWN IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO THE RELEASE) ORIGINAL 1959 DOT RECORDS MONO LP DLP-3154

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

INDESCRIBABLY RARE ORIGINAL, WITHDRAWN PRESSING ON DOT LABEL OF THIS MONUMENTALLY HISTORICALLY AND CULTURALLY IMPORTANT ARTIFACT (LITERALLY A GRANDFATHER OF ALL WORD JAZZ/BEAT POETRY RECORDINGS), PULLED FROM THE PRESSES JUST BEFORE THE START OF THE COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION; ESTIMATES OF THE NUMBER OF PRODUCED COPIES VARY FROM 25  (A REALISTIC ESTIMATE) TO ABOUT 130 COPIES, AS NOTED IN THE LINER NOTES OF THE MUCH MORE COMMON HANOVER REISSUE (EXTREMELY UNLIKELY); VARIOUS PRICE BOOKS AND GUIDES INVARIABLY PLACE THIS RELEASE IN THE TOP-10 TIER OF THE RAREST AMERICAN RECORDS EXTANT. LESS THAN 10 COPIES HAVE BEEN SOLD ON EBAY AND OTHER ONLINE TRADING PLATFORMS IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE COMPANY, AND WE HAVE ALL THE REASON TO BELIEVE THAT NO MORE THAN 20 COPIES SURVIVE WORLDWIDE. HOW MANY OF THOSE 20 OR SO SURVIVING COPIES ARE IN A NEAR MINT CONDITION IS ANYBODY'S GUESS (PROBABLY NO MORE THAN FIVE), BUT WE ASSURE YOU THAT THIS COPY IS PROBABLY THE BEST-PRESERVED COPY IN EXISTENCE. FRANKLY, THIS SELLER NEVER - EVER - EXPECTED TO HOLD IN HIS HANDS ONE OF THESE HOLY GRAILS OF AMERICAN MID-20th CENTURY POETIC JAZZ AVANT-GARDE; I WOULD BE LYING TO YOU IF I TOLD YOU THAT MY HANDS WERE NOT TREMBLING AND THAT MY HEART DIDN'T SKIP A FEW BEATS AS I PICKED UP THIS PRECIOUS OBJECT AND INSPECTED IT IN A HAZE OF DISBELIEF.

·       ABOUT THE PROVENANCE OF THIS ALBUM: THIS ALBUM WAS A PROPERTY OF ►HERMAN SCHOENFELD, THE PROFESSIONAL MUSIC REVIEWER AND ASSISTANT EDITOR OF THE ►VARIETY MAGAZINE WHO PASSED AWAY ►IN 1979. HIS ESTATE WAS BEQUEATHED TO A FAMILY MEMBER WHO LIQUIDATED IT EARLIER THIS YEAR.  THIS COPY OF THE ALBUM ONLY HAD ONE OWNER FOR THE PAST 60 YEARS (SCHOENFELD OR HIS ESTATE) AND NEVER ONCE LEFT HIS HOME SINCE THE MOMENT HE RECEIVED IT FROM DOT RECORDS. WE HONESTLY DOUBT THAT EITHER HE OR HIS HEIR PLAYED IT MORE THAN TWICE,  IF EVEN.  IN CASE SCHOENFELD'S NAME SOUNDS EERILY FAMILIAR, YOU CAN FIND SCHOENFELD'S NAME (TYPICALLY, HIS LINER NOTES OR BRIEF SNIPPETS OF HIS VARIETY REVIEWS) 'HYPING' AND ADORNING QUITE A FEW POPULAR RECORD COVERS, OF WHICH THE FRONT COVER OF SAM COOKE'S 'LIVE AT THE COPA' ALBUM IS PROBABLY THE BEST KNOWN EXAMPLE. (WE HAVE ATTACHED THE IMAGE OF THE SAM COOKE'S ALBUM - WHICH IS OTHERWISE ENTIRELY UNRELATED TO JACK KEROUAC OR THIS PARTICULAR RELEASE - IN OUR IMAGE GALLERY AS A MEANS OF DOCUMENTING THE SHORT LINE OF OWNERSHIP.  SCHOENFELD'S NAME AND A BRIEF FRAGMENT OF HIS SAM COOKE 'VARIETY' REVIEW APPEAR AS REVIEW # 3 OF 4 (NEXT TO THE LAST FROM TOP TO BOTTOM) AND IS CIRCLED IN YELLOW.

This is a lovely & complete original copy of the extraordinarily rare recalled DOT LABEL pressing. rarely offered anywhere, and this is the nicest copy yet offered on eBay, with private sale copies known to go for nearly twice our reserve price… according to Goldmine magazine, POETRY FOR THE BEAT GENERATION by Jack Kerouac and Steve Allen –  recorded but never released on Dot records in 1959 – is one of the ten rarest albums in recording history. The story goes that Kerouac and Allen (who had invited Kerouac to appear on his late night talk show), taped the record in one improvised session at Dot studios in New York, the label where Allen enjoyed success making MOR cocktail jazz lps with producer Bob Thiele.  Before the session – Kerouac reciting over Allen’s improvised piano – could be released, however, Dot chief Randy Wood killed the project, reportedly saying that he wouldn't allow his own children to hear it. Incensed, Steve Allen and Bob Thiele stormed out of Dot to launch Hanover records, where their first release was a repackaged POETRY FOR THE BEAT GENERATION. A small number of the suppressed dot original, however, variously estimated between 25 and 130 copies, survived, and this album features unique cover art, a cool sketch, slightly reminiscent of David Stone Martin, of a beatnik coffee-house scene. a legitimate rarity, especially in this condition

***

Poetry for the Beat Generation marked Jack Kerouac's debut as a recording artist. Strangely enough, it was the by-product of a disastrous first show by Kerouac in an engagement at the Village Vanguard during December of 1957. For the second performance, Kerouac's friend Steve Allen provided the accompaniment at the piano, with results so impressive that it would lead Kerouac to a short but dazzling career as a recording artist. The first result was this album, which came at the suggestion of either Allen  or his friend, producer Bob Thiele, who was working for Dot Records at the time. The record was cut in a single session and a single take for each piece. Allen's graceful piano opens the recording and Kerouac comes in, reading "October in the Railroad Earth" for seven minutes, off of a roll of paper in front of him. Kerouac's reading are in a class by themselves, and separate from Allen  -- the two performances co-exist and weave together without ever really joining, and the result is a peculiar form of jazz; Kerouac did his thing, Allen  did his, and the result was a spellbinding performance, and it was musical, despite Kerouac's seeming monotone reading, which never slowed or otherwise interacted with Allen's piano -- his voice dances to its own beat, with Allen  embellishing and working around him; in the process, you get visions of various facets of Kerouac's work and personality, in extended pieces such as "October in the Railroad Earth" and short, piercing brilliant exclamations such as "Deadbelly" and "Charlie Parker." The resulting album, cut in March of 1958, was one of the crowning achievements in recording of the 1950s. But it so appalled Randy Wood, the president of Dot Records, with its meandering narrative and daring language and subject matter, that the release was canceled, with Wood  denouncing the recording in the trade papers as tasteless and questionable. Somewhere over 100 promotional copies of the Dot album (catalog number 3154) had gotten out to disc jockeys and reviewers, however, thus making it one of the rarest LPs in the label's entire history. Thiele  finally left the company over the dispute and he reclaimed the master tape -- it was on the Hanover label, formed with Allen  (who was virtually a pop-culture institution at the time), that Poetry for the Beat Generation finally reached the public in June of 1959. It's still worth a listen now every bit as much as it was in 1959, and perhaps even more so.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT  VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 3 (back side)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
